Inner North

Canberra’s Inner North is made up of 14 different suburbs and spans an area from the northern foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin, to the ridges of Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura.

Directly adjacent to the Canberra City Centre, the Inner North is the retail and commercial heart of Canberra. Popular with young urban professionals due to the multitude of dining and entertainment options the area has to offer, the Inner North is often viewed as one of the most dynamic regions in Canberra. The area is also popular with students and academics with the region’s close proximity to the Australian National University.
The Inner North is the heart of Canberra, and you will discover whatever you feel hungry for. Between the City, Braddon and Dickson regions there is a large variety of options - you will find fine dining, unique and modern international cuisines, cafes that are always buzzing and boutique and unique bars and pubs.
The city centre is overflowing with things to do. The Canberra Centre and the surrounding streets are a popular shopping spot, especially with the new beauty and homewares precincts in the Monaro Mall. There are both Palace Electric and Dendy cinemas, escape rooms, and the casino. Many restaurants and bars hold degustation and tasting events, and bars will host Open Mic nights, live music, book and album launches, and other performances.
The Inner North holds some of Canberra’s best sporting facilities such as the Yowani Golf Course and the Canberra Racecourse. There are local sports clubs, multiple swimming pools, as well as spots for lawn bowls and sports centres - the Lyneham Hockey Centre and the Next Gen Health & Lifestyle Centre. There are plenty of parks to get outside, and Mount Ainslie is a great walk for those wanting more than a weekend stroll.
The Inner North is bursting with cultural landmarks - the War Memorial and National Museum are great experiences, and there is always something on at the Canberra Theatre. The Botanic Gardens are beautiful at all times of the year.
CIT Reid is in the Inner North, as well as being in close proximity to the Australian National University. There are a number of events that are held in the Inner North throughout the year, including the Multicultural Festival, the Canberra Show and many other markets and exhibitions. Over a few weeks in September and October, Floriade breathes colour in to Commonwealth Park and Skyfire takes place in March.
